NORTHERN BROWN SNAKE             Storeria dekayi

Length: 9-13 inches.                                                   

Color: Tan, brown,or grey.

Habitat:  Hardwood forests, mixed hardwood-pine forests, pine woods, grasslands, early successional stages of abandoned agricultural land, woodlots, and urban areas.

Range: The Northern Brown Snake ranges from southern Quebec and New England southward to North Carolina, and westward to Ohio and eastern Kentucky.                       

Diet: Earthworms, slugs, spiders, small amphibians, small fish, and insects.

Notes: They are nocturnal.  Brown snakes never bite when captured. Their only real defense is the musk glands which they freely exercise when first captured.
