NORTHERN COPPERHEAD    Agkistrodon contortrix

Length: 24-36 inches.                                                 

Color: Coppered-colored with brown blotches all around body.

Habitat: Rocky wooden hillsides, mountainous area, and sawdust piles.

Range: Massachusetts to Illinois to Tennessee to Alabama to Georgia.

Where in Connecticut?: Southern and Central Connecticut.  Large numbers on the Traprock Ridges.

Diet: Mice, small birds, frogs, and insects.

Notes: Copperheads are very poisonous.  They are passive and will not strike you if you leave them alone.  They hibernate in the Traprock ridges in winter in Connecticut.
