Map of Dorset, Vermont. The Irish concentrated in East Dorset, many families living part way up the mountain. The land was cheaper and they were closer to the quarries where they worked. Before the construction of St. Jerome's church and cemetery in 1874, most of the Irish were buried in an Irish cemetery near their homes on the mountain. After the church opened, most of the bodies were relocated, but a few still remain up on the mountainside. Eventually some bought farms in South and East Dorset, taking advantage of prices as the original owners left for better land out west.
