The Community Center is located in Huntington Center (see directions below).    The Shelton Parks and Recreation Department operates the Community Center and they have a main office just off of the lobby area.  Call (203) 925-8422 for more information.

A wide variety of classes are offered and they are usually open to non-residents.  Fees vary. Upcoming classes are posted on a bulletin board in the lobby and there are hand-outs you can pick up for each class.  They also have a swimming pool, an indoor basketball court, and an exercise gym.   Swimming lessons are offered all year in the form of group lessons or private lessons.

Upcoming Classes  of Interest to Homeschoolers: 

Little Scientists Program Set: The Shelton Parks and Recreation Department will again be offering the popular Little Scientists Learning Program at the Shelton Community Center.  The curriculum has been developed by Dr. Heidi Gold-Dworkin and will include a course booklet and hands-on, take-home projects on subjects such as: Ocian Ecology, Fossils, Seasons, Flight, Power of Pressure, Rainbows and more. Subjects will change throughout the year so there will be very little duplication.  Classes are designed to increase children's curiosity and lead to later learning.  The course will run for 8 weeks on Mondays and Wednesdays with the fee being $88.00.  Space is limited and those interested must preregister at the Center.  Begins Monday, January 29 or Wed. Jan. 31, 2001. Ages 3-5 meet from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m.  Ages 6-9 meet from 4:45 to 5:30.

Children's Acting Class: The Shelton Parks and Recreation Department will be holding a Children's Acting Program at the Community Center.  The classes will be held Monday afternoons beginning January 22, 2001, for eight weeks.  A class for children ages 4 to 6 will run from 3:30 - 4:15 p.m. with the fee being $60.00, while those ages 7 to 12 will meet from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. for a fee of $70.  There will be no class on February 12 and February 19.   Elise Murphy Mulligan of Tiger Tale Theatre and theStamford Theatre Works will be the coordinator.  In the program children are introduced to the acting process through the use of improvisation, creative play, vocal exercises, movements and expressions, and character and story development.  The program will be varied so children who have completed a past session will not have duplications.   Space is limited and those interested must pre-register at the Center. 

Tae Kwon Do Lessons: The Shelton Martial Arts academy is no offering martial arts classes for both children and adults at the Center.  The course will instill the philosophy of Tae Kwon Do with students energies focused in a positive goal oriented manner, learning a winning attitude with pride and respect. The program, which is teh Korean form of Karate, will be run by Robert Bernstein and Valerie Calvanezi.  Both instructors hold second degree black belts with 28 years combined experience.   The course is open to both males and females 5 years of age and older.  Shelton residents will have preference in registrations with non-residents able to fill any vacancies. Classes will meet Tuesdays and Fridays as follows: 5:30 - 6:30 Beginner Children; 6:30 - 7:30 Advanced Children; 7:30 - 8:30 Adults.   To register, contact Robert Bernstein at 925-8346 or visit the Shelton Community Center.

Directions: The address is 41 Church Street, but the building is actually located right on Route 108 near the Huntington green and fire station.  Coming from the north on Route 8 you take exit 12, turn right off the exit onto Old Stratford Road, go straight through the light onto Commerce Drive until it ends, take a right onto Huntington Street and follow it all the way to Huntington Center, go left around the green until you are headed in the opposite direction, and the Community Center will be on your right.  Parking is in the back.
