Youth
Soccer is a national non-profit organization for children from ages 5 to 15. City Youth
Soccer organizations in the Lower Naugatuck Valley are located with the Connecticut South
Central District. These city Youth Soccer organizations can vary quite a bit from
one another, so that the fees and procedures in Naugatuck might be different than that in
Shelton.
There are
"Recreational Groups" and "Traveling Teams." The recreational groups
are geared towards education and rules of the game, and having fun. There may
be no official "standings" or records. You will find that there are novice
players in all groups and the teams are formed to distribute experienced players among
different teams.
Traveling teams are a
more competitive group that "travel" to other towns to play their teams as well
as host "home" games with other towns. Cities in the lower
Naugatuck Valley are within the South Central district, which means the teams (and travel)
can range from Norwalk to Madison or Guilford and northerly to Wallingford, Naugatuck
etc. Travel teams generally hold two weekday evening practices and games are on a
Saturday or Sunday (depending on age group).
There are both fall and
spring seasons. Fall season typically runs from around Labor Day to
mid-November, and the spring season runs from around April to June. Sign-up
deadlines are typically months before the season starts, so call early. One does not need
to be a resident of a particular town to play in that town.
Practices vary according
to the town. In Shelton they are held one weekday evening per week, and games are on
Saturday mornings for the recreational leagues.
Registration also varies
according to the town. In Shelton it is around $45 for the recreation teams, and $75 for
travel. There may be a discount for families with more than one child
registering. A jersey and shin guards also must also be purchased.
