Shelton Receives DEP Award
for Greenway Program

On March 22, 2000, Shelton received an award at the annual Connecticut Greenways Conference for its outstanding greenway program.   The Shelton award was received by Mayor Mark Lauretti and several members of the Conservation Commission and Trails Committee, and there were hundreds of people in audience from all over the state.  Congratulations, Shelton!

From the Connecticut Greenways Council:

"The Town of Shelton has made greenways a centerpiece of open space planning, developing plans for four major greenways, which will eventually link with each other.  A current project is the Shelton Lakes Recreation Path, which will connect local schools, downtown Shelton and Huntington Center.  The people of Shelton have supported the use of municipal bonds to purchase open space, and the town has been a successful applicant for DEP grant funds for land purchases. The preservation of family owned farms and forests is also a priority of the municipality, which feels the same development pressures as its Fairfield County neighbors.  The town has also committed to turning brownfields into greenways, and the Riverwalk adjacent to the Housatonic River is now a gathering spot for residents, with a thriving farmer's market as part of the attraction."
